Transforming a Preschool into a Mediterranean Villa

San Anselmo

2024

Oak Knoll was built in 1928 as a 2 bedroom/1 bath cottage on a corner lot on a busy street just a few blocks walk from downtown Fairfax. Owned by the original family for over 70 years, the building had been sold and used as a preschool for the past 20 years — and it looked it. Our challenge was to create a functionally modern home that was large enough for extended family and isolated from the busy street, while maintaining its original charm and character. Our approach was to reorient the home so that it was approached from, and lived on, the quiet side street. All new construction faced the side street and, wherever possible, period relevant reclaimed materials were used. Today, Oak Knoll is a breathtaking 4 bedroom/4 bathroom/4 fireplace/3 fountain villa. Or at least that what ‘The Week’ said when they organically selected it a one of “Six Breathtaking Homes of Northern California”.
